First Communion Party Ideas

Last year I was planning my daughter's First Communion party and I didn't find many ideas on the Web. Because of this, I wanted to share some ideas that I came up with in hopes of inspiring others as they plan their own child's First Communion party.

The first thing you should decide is if you want to throw a large party or a smaller, more intimate party. Who do you want to invite? Do you want to host the party at home or at a venue like a restaurant, banquet hall, or country club? There are no right or wrong answers when deciding this. You need to decide what is best for your family when celebrating this special Sacrament.

For my daughter's party, we wanted to host her First Communion party at our home and include our family and close friends. The guest list, with children, was about 40 people.

Invitations
When deciding on your First Communion invitations, you can get the kind that you fill out, an invitation kit that you can print at home, order personalized ones online, or make your invitations. I am a complete sucker for personalized invitations so these are my favorites:

I recommend sending your invitations about 6 to 8 weeks before your party. Plan to have your RSVP date about two weeks before the party. This is especially important if you're having your party at a venue or having your party catered so you'll allow enough time to get a final guest count.

Planning the Menu for your First Communion Party
The menu is a very important part of any party so a First Communion party is no different. If you're having your party at a venue, there will most likely be menu choices similar to a wedding. You can decide how fancy or informal you'd like your menu based on the type of party that you want. Some people prefer a simple luncheon while others prefer an elaborate menu with carving and pasta stations.

A party at home can either be catered where you'll have similar menu choices as a venue or you can plan to cook the meal yourself. Here are some fun themes with menu options that work well when cooking for a crowd:

Italian
Appetizers: Antipasto Tray and Bruschetta

Soup and Salad: Caprese Salad, Italian Wedding Soup, and Minestrone

Entrees: Sausage and Peppers, Meatballs and Marinara, Lasagna, Chicken Picaata or Marsala, and Stuffed Shells

Mexican
Appetizers: Chips and Salsa, 7 Layer Dip, Hot Queso Dip, Nachos, Cheese Quesadilla, and Jalapeno Poppers

Soup and Salad: Chicken Tortilla Soup, White Chili, and Taco Salad

Entree: Taco or Fajita Bar with all the fixings – peppers, onions, lettuce, tomato, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, salsa.

Greek
Appetizers: Spanakopita and Tzatziki with Pita Bread

Soup and Salad: Lemon Rice Soup and Greek Salad

Entrees: Gyros, Beef and Chicken Kabobs, and Moussaka

Barbecue
Appetizers: Chicken Wings, Spring Rolls, Deviled Eggs, and Spinach Dip

Salads: Coleslaw, Potato Salad, Greek Pasta Salad, Tuna Pasta Salad, and 7 Layer Salad

Entrees: Grilled Hot Dogs and Hamburgers with all of the fixings (chili, bacon, sauteed mushrooms, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese), Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Sloppy Joes, and Grilled Kabobs.

The Cake!
Another important element to your First Communion party is the cake. I spent a lot of time searching for some cake ideas and I finally decided on a cross shaped pull apart cake. You can see it here. A pull apart cake is made from cupcakes and arranged to the shape of your choice. We had a candy and cookie buffet too which had many dessert options along with extra cupcakes. Some other popular cake choices are cakes made in the shape of a cross, tiered topsy turvy cakes, and traditional sheet cakes.

Party Favors
It's a nice gesture to have party favors for your guests. I decided to do a candy and cookie buffet for my daughter's First Communion party. It served as some dessert options during the party and then party favors for the guests to take home. You can read more about it here. Some other popular party favors are candles, personalized candy bars, plantable favors, and book marks.

Party Supplies
These are my favorite party supplies for a First Communion party. I like that they come in pink and blue so they are more personalized for your child:

Apparel
Last but certainly not least, I wanted to talk about apparel. I think shopping for my daughter's dress was one of the most exciting parts of planning her First Communion. We shopped at all of the major department stores and even some bridal stores in the flower girl section. I ended up finding her dress online because we just weren't finding the perfect dress in our local stores. You can find some really great bargains online and I highly recommend taking a peek at some of these beautiful dresses:

Boys typically wear a suit or dress pants with a nice shirt and a tie. For both girls and boys apparel, you should check with your church to see if they have clothing rules or requirements. At our church, the girls are not allowed to wear sleeveless dresses and their veils were all handmade by their moms during a workshop so all of the girls matched.
